Now it’s time to meet your running coaches:
Like a number of women, I discovered running through taking part in the Race for Life. I remember it well; I completed it in 39:30 and was delighted to have run all the way. Well and truly hooked, I went on to help set up what is now Brighton and Hove Women’s Running Club, where I was an extremely active member for many years before joining Arena 80.
I have completed many marathons and ultra-distances, some good and some where I have had to drag myself to the finish!
I have been involved with the Brighton Marathon since the beginning and regularly support marathon runners as they make the journey to completing 26.2 miles. Whilst marathon distance is a popular goal I am well aware that it is not for everyone and so I provide equal amounts of support and enthusiasm to someone wanting to run 5k as well as coaching a group to improve their speed over any distance.
I am a qualified Coach in Running Fitness, accomplished endurance runner, who enjoys pushing the distance boundaries and all-round running geek!”
When I was younger I was one of those kids who was last in Sports Day events and thoroughly hated anything sports related, particularly running!! I came to running much later in my life driven by wanting to run the Race for Life. I came across a leaflet in Hove Library advertising a 10-week beginners course with Brighton & Hove Running Sisters; I sent off the application, got myself a place and the rest is history! I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed running. I took to it like a duck to water and, in order to achieve my 3 training sessions per week as part of the beginners course, I would run up and down my road, so that my daughter could see me from the front room, as at that time I didn’t have regular evening child care.
Fast forward the clocks to the current time and I am now a UKA qualified Coach in Running Fitness (CiRF) and an active member of a local running club (Arena 80), where I coach an Improvers Group at Withdean stadium. I have completed 7 marathons (number 8 will be Brighton Marathon in April 2019), various half marathons, quite a few 10k and gained my 100 parkrun t-shirt.
I ran my first marathon in London in 2006; my finish time was 5hrs 16mins 2 secs. Over the years, I trained following the mileage training programmes and just slowly chipped away at my marathon finish times. During the marathon-training season 2012/2013, I followed the time-on-feet training programme and achieved a PB of 4hrs 35mins 35secs. It’s amazing what your body can do if you train it the right way!
Running is a part of my life and has taken me to places I would never have visited. I have made life-long friendships who share the same love of running. I enjoy supporting and encouraging new runners to achieve their goals, and giving back to the running community which gave me so much when I was starting out myself. Building confidence is a key issue for a new runner and I see this as one of my main roles.
I am looking forward to working with Body Happy to help marathon runners achieve their goals.
