Today is International Women’s day, which ‘is a global day celebrating the social economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity’. Today we look at six inspirational women who have achieved and inspired great things in sport/fitness.

Let us start by celebrating the boss of Body Happy, Jenny Day. Jenny has been running Body Happy since September 2014. To find out more about Jenny, read her ‘Meet the team’ post.

Okay, so this one is not a woman, Lewes Football club is next on the list. Why? Lewes Football club is the first football club in the world, professional or semi-professional, to pay their women’s team the same as their men’s. The football club is continuing to raise awareness of equality through Equality FC

Jasmin Paris, where do we start, winner, yep outright winner, of the 267 mile Montane Spine race; broke the record by 12 hours, yep course record; all whilst stopping to breastfeed her daughter at pit stops! Take that in, whilst re-hydrating, taking fuel on, changing kit, resting! Jasmin is also taking the time to breastfeed her daughter.  You can read more about her feat here.

Gertrude Ederle, have you heard of her? Gertrude became the first women to swim the English Channel back in 1926, this was done whilst wearing motor cycle googles!

We are going to mention Katherine Switzer, who officially became the first women to run the Boston Marathon officially with a bib. However, reading this article, we realised that another woman needs a mention, Roberta Gibb. The article titled ‘The Fight to Establish the Women’s Race’ explains the fight women had in order to be able to run long distances. This fight is still on-going today with cross country distances being different for men and women, varying from 15k and 8k to 12k and 8k. .

We saved this lady until last, Johanna Quaas. This video shows you all you need to know. In this video she does a floor routine, parallel bars, beam and high bar! In this video Johanna is in her 90’s, yep 90’s! How inspirational is, movement, flexibility, balance and courage. You have to love Johanna, ‘My face is old but my heart is young’

Okay, so that was seven we have listed but who’s counting! If you know someone who is an inspirational women to you, reach out to them and let them know.
